Future talent shines at Nationwide Junior Athletics Championships

Following the announcement of the ParalympicsGB athletics squad for the games in London, future talent took to the track this weekend. Over 250 athletes showcased their talent at the Nationwide Junior Athletics Championships.

Organised by Disability Sport Events (DSE), a programme managed by the English Federation of Disability Sport, the championships brought together athletes  with a wide range of impairments. They competed at the University of Warwick stadium in a full track and field programme.

The athletes were aged between 12-20 years old and had qualified through their regional championships to represent their regions and gain points to win  contest the Graham Bool Memorial trophy. As well as  going for personal bests, they had the opportunity to be nominated for outstanding male or female athlete.

Long term supporters of the event, Lions Club International, also recognised an athlete from the power wheelchair slalom event which was won by Abbie Hunnisett from the South East region.

After setting some fantastic times in the 100m and 200m on the track, Maria Lyle (T35, Scotland) picked up the award of outstanding female athlete on her debut at the championships. The outstanding male athlete, Lewis Edwards (F33, South East) picked up the award for his performance in the shot, discus and javelin where he picked up three gold medals.

The Graham Bool Memorial Team trophy was won for the second year in a row by the South West, having been challenged strongly all weekend by East region.

Rob Belbin, South West team manager said,

“The team have really come together and supported each other to win this trophy. It is great to see their dedication and hard work be rewarded by retaining the title of regional winners”

DSE would like to thank Nationwide, Lions Club International, Hilton in the Community Foundation, University of Warwick, Water Direct and all of the volunteers who supported the event.
