Sensational Saturday for ParalympicsGB

Ellie Simmonds smashed the world record in an unforgettable 400m Freestyle final to claim GB’s second swimming gold of the Games. On the track Richard Whitehead shrugged off a shaky start to storm home in the Olympic Stadium with a world 200m record.

Sarah Storey snatched her second gold of the games after Neil Fachie, piloted by her husband Barney, stole a morning victory in the Velodrome.

Natasha Baker broke the Paralympic record to win Grade II Individual Championship gold at her first Games, while Lee Pearson missed out on his 10th title.

Sport by sport round-up:

Archery: Sharron Vennard was Britain’s only winner at the archery range. She booked a quarter-final place while Kenny Allen, Paul Browne and John Cavanagh all went out.

Athletics: Whitehead rode a wave of noise as he sprinted from last to first to strike gold in a world record time. Gemma Prescott, Claire Williams and Rob Womack won bronze in the field.

Cycling: Tandem Fachie and Storey set a world record to win gold in the 1km Time Trial just hours before Barney’s belle Sarah won her second gold of the Games in the 500m TT. There was an emotional bronze for Jody Cundy and a second silver for Jon-Allan Butterworth.

Equestrian: Baker claimed her first Games gold in Grade II, Lee Pearson was denied his 10th Grade Ib Paralympic title when he was beaten for the first time at four Games.

Football 7-a-side: Britain lost their opening match 3-0 to Brazil in a nervous start at the Riverbank Arena.

Goalball: GB men earned their first ever point in Paralympic competition in a tense 3-3 draw with Sweden giving them an outside chance of quarter-final place.

Judo: Sam Ingram won Britain’s first judo medal for 16 years, taking silver in the Under 90kg class while his brother Joe missed out at Under 100kg.

Powerlifting: Jason Irving and Natalie Blake couldn’t add to Britain’s medal haul. Irving was eighth while illness-hit Blake failed to register a lift.

Rowing: Double Scullers Nick Beighton and Sam Scowen put in a thrilling performance at Eton Dorney to win their repechage and qualify for the final. Three GB crews go for medals tomorrow.

Sailing: Two of Britain’s crews lie second while the Sonar trio are sixth after the first pair of races in Weymouth and Portland.

Shooting: Matt Skelhon struck silver in the Air Rifle prone SH1 after James Bevis had bagged a bronze in the SH2 version in the morning session.

Sitting Volleyball: The GB women lost in three sets to the powerful Dutch and now need to win against Japan on Monday.

Swimming: Simmonds fought back in the final length to retain her S6 400m Freestyle title. Claire Cashmore added a Breastroke silver and Matt Whorwood a Freestyle bronze.

Table Tennis: Will Bayley is sure of a silver medal after winning his semi-final while Sara Head, Paul Davies and Ross Wilson will all battle for bronze on Monday.

Wheelchair Basketball: Britain’s women finally found their shooting range to beat Brazil with a fourth-period come-back that keeps their quarter-final hopes alive. The men also enjoyed their first win, a thumping 40-point victory against Colombia.

Wheelchair Tennis: Gordon Reid and Dave Phillipson progressed past the opening round of the men’s Singles and Lucy Shuker reached the second round of the women’s draw.
