Active Kids 2013- equipment for disabled club members

Following the success of previous years, Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2013 scheme is up and running to help children lead healthier and more active lives.

Now in its ninth year, Active Kids has so far put over 4.9 million pieces of equipment into the hands of millions of children across the UK and will this year be extended to include groups that provide opportunities for disabled young people.

Building on the excitement of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Sainsbury’s and Sport England are working together to encourage thousands of clubs where disabled people play sport to join the successful scheme. Signing up means the clubs can benefit from collecting & redeeming vouchers in return for equipment and experiences that help its customers and the community to lead healthier, more active lifestyles.

Sport England is also investing £1 million of National Lottery funding to provide free training courses to help coaches, leaders, assistants and parents develop the skills and confidence to include disabled people in sporting activity.

This investment extends into community clubs the high quality support commitment for teachers through the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All scheme, creating a seamless approach for disabled people in school and community sport. Ellie Simmonds OBE, Active Kids ambassador said:

“Now is the time to make sure we’re maintaining children’s excitement around sport, and in particular Paralympic sport, We made great progress last year and schemes like Active Kids will help to continue that to make sure the next generation is active and involved in a huge range of activities.”
