EFDS runners set for London Marathon

Twenty runners have put their bodies through months of grueling training runs all for Sunday's iconic London Marathon and to raise money for EFDS's events programme- Disability Sport Events.

They have battled through the snow and rain to prepare for one of the challenges of their lives. Some are hoping to beat their personal bests, some are just hoping to make it round the course but all are doing it for a great cause!

The London Marathon was founded in 1981 by former Olympic Champion, Chris Brasher and has grown to be one of the most loved and supported mass participation events in the world. Taking some of the most historic sights of the capital, the 26.2 mile race has become famous for the crowds of supporters lining the whole route and the incredible sums of money raised for charity by the amateur runners.

EFDS has the support of twenty fantastic runners who all have their own personal reasons for running the race. One of the runners, Matt Peck, an associate from Deloitte, has grown up around sport for disabled people. His mother has devoted her life to teaching, coaching and facilitating sport for disabled children and he wanted to raise money to support a charity who works hard to increase opportunities in sport for disabled people.

Heather Merchan, a Business Manager from London, was inspired by the Paralympic Games and although she had not exercised in nearly four years, decided to take part in the Marathon for EFDS. She wants to help keep the Paralympic spirit alive. An incredible commitment to our charity!

Disability Sport Events (DSE), our events programme, is a completely self-funded programme and relies on people like Matt and Heather to continue our work. DSE delivers a range of regional, national and international sports events. From grassroots events for young beginners through to elite competitions, we help increase disabled people’s choice when looking for participation opportunities at every level. The team also work with National Governing Bodies of sport to support them to deliver inclusive events and provide pathways to international success for disabled people with all impairments.

If you are inspired to take part in the London Marathon for us in 2014 or maybe take on a different challenge please do get in touch. We have places in a number of the major sporting events in the UK and would welcome you onto our team!

Another of our 2013 runners stated:

“I wanted to support a lower profiled charity who do great work for disabled people, EFDS was the answer. A fantastic cause and fantastic team. Roll on the 21 April!”
