Handy guide to cricket for disabled people

As the England Learning Disability Cricket Team prepare to take on South Africa in the INAS Tri-Series T20 final today, Friday 21 July – EFDS showcases a handy guide to cricket for disabled people.

Written by cricket enthusiast Darren Douglas, with input from the England Cricket Board (ECB), the guide provides a comprehensive look at the different cricket formats for disabled people.

The guide features a detailed look at a number of the different cricket formats for disabled people and lots of supportive information about how and where people can give it a go. From table cricket for people with profound impairments and adapted versions of the game for those with sensory and physical impairments, there is something for everyone.

Author of the guide, Darren Douglas decided to create the resource after a conversation with a work colleague that plays for a local cricket club, who commented about the lack of information for aspiring disabled cricketers. Darren consulted with Richard Hill, Disability Cricket Support Officer at the ECB who assisted with some of the content.

Darren said:

“The aim of this guide is to provide a place where disabled people can go and discover more about disability cricket. From grassroots level up to the national teams that exist for four impairment groups.
You’ll also find discussions about the types of formats that are available for different age groups and abilities. Links are provided for wherever you may live, to various county cricket boards and other major organisations.”

In addition to encouraging more disabled people to enjoy cricket, the guide can also support those responsible for delivering cricket sessions. The guide includes useful statistics about disabled people’s participation in sport and insight from EFDS’s Understanding Barriers to Participation research (2012).

It is hoped that this guide will encourage more disabled people to consider cricket as an activity and support them to access suitable opportunities local to them.
