Recognising the importance of inclusive sport on World Teachers’ Day

On the 23rd annual World Teachers’ Day, the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) is celebrating the success of the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training programme.

Since its creation in 2012, over 10,300 teachers, trainee teachers and schools staff have attended a Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training workshop. As a result, we estimate that over 236,000 children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have benefitted from the programme.

Furthermore, external evaluation shows that on average participants’ have reported a 52% increase in their confidence to deliver high quality inclusive PE lessons as a result of the training.

Through funding from Sainsbury’s and working in partnership with the Home Country disability sport organisations, the British Paralympic Association and the Youth Sport Trust, the English Federation of Disability Sport developed the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE training. It aims to support teachers, trainee teachers and school staff to provide a high quality Physical Education curriculum for all pupils, ensuring that young disabled people are fully included in their lessons.

The programme has been highly praised by teachers across England. Jill Newbolt, PE Teacher at Thurcroft Junior Academy, said that:

“The Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training is really important for teachers’ confidence. There is so little time given to inclusion on PE training, and we do want all children not just to be involved, but to be challenged and make progress as well.”

David Butterworth, PE Leadership and Innovation Project Co-ordinator at Redwood Secondary School, added:

“The Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training gives teachers a great grounding – as a teacher it certainly gives me the scope to be flexible to allow all young people to achieve”

The Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All has been recognised both nationally and internationally. In 2016, the programme was shortlisted for a Charity Award in the disability category and earlier this year it was received global recognition through being shortlisted in the Beyond Sport Global Awards’ Sport for Equality category.
