Disability comparison analysis for Census 2011 and sports participation

The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) have produced some useful fact sheets- comparing the Census 2011 statistics to the Sport England Active People Survey 6- in relation to disabled people. These fact sheets have been split into counties, which then compare against England and the region. They provide the number of disabled people within every county and how many currently take part in sport.

The Census statistics help paint a picture of the nation and how we live. They provide a detailed snapshot of the population and its characteristics, and underpin funding allocation to provide public services. On Census Day, 27 March 2011, the population for England & Wales was 56,075,912. Within the Census in 2011, respondents were asked whether they consider themselves as a disabled person. The definition of disability was: People whose day to day activities are limited a little or a lot by their illness or disability.

Active People Survey 6 was recorded for the period October 2011 to October 2012. The Survey continuously measures the number of people taking part in sport across the nation and in local communities, including disabled people. It is the largest survey of sport and activity ever carried out in Europe. TNS-BMRB runs the survey on behalf of Sport England.

Within the county fact sheets, you can find the following breakdowns:

  • Prevalence of disabled people within region – Census 2011
  • Proportion of people playing sport at a moderate intensity at least once a week for 30 mins – APS6
  • Proportion of people not playing any sport (at any intensity for any duration) – APS6
  • Proportion of people that are members of sports clubs – APS6
  • Proportion of people who have received tuition in sport in the last 12 months– APS6
  • Proportion of people taking part in organised competition in sport in the last 12 months – APS6
