Sport for all in the Forest of Dean

Freedom Leisure’s Active Communities Service in the Forest of Dean has launched a new inclusive multi-sports programme at Lydney Leisure Centre. The programme aims to give individuals who may be less active the opportunity to enjoy being active and take part in sporting activities.

Freedom Leisure, which operates five centres across the Forest of Dean on behalf of Forest of Dean District Council, is working with Active Gloucestershire to deliver weekly sports sessions for young disabled people aged 4-19 years and their families. Funded by Sport England, the two year programme will provide inclusive opportunities for people within the local community to enjoy activities such as boccia, tennis, football and golf.

Steph Moreland, Freedom Leisure Active Communities Officer, said:

“This programme is simply designed to support individuals in the area who may lack confidence when using a leisure centre or who may not currently be involved in community groups. There are around 1,000 young disabled people within the Forest of Dean and we hope this programme will enable them to try new activities and have fun.
“It is our plan that these sessions will be led by participants and what they enjoy doing, and therefore will remain flexible and be tailor made for those in attendance each week. This wonderful programme is designed to support individuals who may currently be inactive and we invite children and their friends and families to come along for some fun time together, with our support.”

Eight participants attended the first session on Saturday 13 January.

Steph, added:

“We are very grateful to have received funding from Sport England via Active Gloucestershire allowing us to offer sessions at a subsidised rate of £2 each!”

The multi-sports sessions will run every Saturday at Lydney Leisure Centre. 10am-11am for children aged 4-15 years, 11am-12noon for young people aged 16-19 years. Children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult.
