Brits secure clean sweep at PTR Championships

British players secured a clean sweep of the men’s and women’s singles and doubles titles for the fourth time in five years over the weekend at the PTR Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Hilton Head, South Carolina after Gordon Reid and Jordanne Whiley won Sunday’s singles finals, beating their respective doubles partners Marc McCarroll and Lucy Shuker, with whom they had been victorious on Saturday.

World No. 6 Reid took his personal tally of titles in Hilton Head to ten as he remained unbeaten since 2009 at the ITF 2 Series tournament after a hard won 7-5, 6-3 win over British No. 2 McCarroll in Sunday’s rain-delayed men’s singles final. Top seed Reid dropped just six games in three matches en route to Sunday’s men’s singles final, while fourth seed McCarroll had upset Japanese second seed and world No. 11 Takuya Miki 6-4, 7-6(4) in Saturday’s semi-finals.

Also on Saturday Reid and McCarrroll won their third men’s doubles title together at the Championships, adding to previous victories in 2010 and 2011 after defeating Miki and Australia’s Ben Weekes 6-2, 6-4. Reid won his first doubles title there in 2009 partnering current British No. 3 David Phillipson before also claiming victory in 2012 partnering American Steve Welch. Reid, who reached his second Grand Slam singles semi-final of the year at the US Open in New York, said:

“It's a great feeling to win another two titles here this year and to have won them both five years in a row. It was a tough final today. Me and Marc know each other’s games well, so it's always difficult to play against each other, but I'm very happy with the result and it’s a nice ending to this US tour”

Whiley claimed her first women’s singles title in Hilton Head, having finished runner-up to Shuker in another all-British final in 2009. However, world No. 8 Whiley made much the better start on this occasion and held on to beat top seed and world No. 7 Shuker 6-2, 7-5, ending Shuker’s ambitions of a fourth women’s singles title in five years in Hilton Head.

Shuker and Whiley had already claimed their third women’s doubles title together at the event, having previously teamed up to win the title in 2009 and 2010. After dropping just three games to reach Saturday’s final, Shuker and Whiley got the better of American duo Shelby Baron and Emmy Kaiser with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 victory. Shuker is now unbeaten in the women’s doubles in Hilton Head since 2009, having also partnered British No. 3 Louise Hunt to win the title in 2011 and teaming up with Germany’s Katharina Kruger to claim the spoils in 2012. Whiley said:

“I’m so happy. I played a great first set today and managed to hold on and it’s my fourth title here at the tournament after the three doubles titles with Lucy. This tournament has proved so successful for the Brits in recent years and I’m really happy to have been a part of it all. It’s the second time I’ve won both singles and doubles titles in a tournament in the USA since May and it’s my third win over Lucy in four matches this season, so it’s a great end to this latest tour.”
