Athletes set to go in the Yorkshire Typhoo regional athletics

On Wednesday 2 May 2018 athletes from local clubs and schools across Yorkshire are competing in the Typhoo Regional Athletics Championships at the Dorothy Hyndman Stadium. Many taking part hope to qualify for the Typhoo National Junior Championships in July.

Typhoo and Activity Alliance have teamed up for fourth year running to support young disabled athletes across England. Every year 1400 disabled athletes in total take part in this particular athletics programme.

Organised by local volunteers, the Yorkshire regional event will see around 150 athletes per region compete in a series of track and field events. Amongst them is Thomas, from Oakfield Park School.

Thomas said:

“I love competing in the Typhoo Athletics Championships as it gives me that opportunity to challenge myself against other people, which I like to do, and everyone cheers you on.”

Ian Spencer, Events Development Officer, said:

“We are looking forward to another exciting day of athletics with lots of enthusiasm, excitement and encouragement on display. I am sure we will see some outstanding performances as usual. Thanks as always to Typhoo and Activity Alliance for supporting athletics in the region. Hopefully the weather will be kind!”

This event is one of seven regional qualifiers that lead up to the Typhoo National Junior Athletics Championships climax on 7 and 8 July, in Warwick.

Barry Horne, Chief Executive for Activity Alliance, said:

“We are delighted to be working with Typhoo for a fourth year through our events programme. Year on year athletes and volunteers comment how much they value these events. It’s a pleasure to watch the athletes develop from regional to national champions. Typhoo’s support means we can ensure many more disabled people can reap the benefits of an active lifestyle.”
