New Sports Minister- Helen Grant MP

Helen Grant MP for Maidstone and the Weald, has been appointed the new Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Sport and Equalities. The new Minister, who has an established background in sport as a recreational tennis player, a former county hockey and regional age-group judo champion. She is a qualified lawyer and has been an MP since the 2010 general election.

Helen replaces the outgoing Hugh Robertson who becomes Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. For three years, he has worked at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on behalf of the sector.

Barry Horne, Chief Executive for the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) said:

“EFDS would like to thank Hugh for all his support over his time in post, as well as give a warm welcome to Helen on her new position. We are certain with her background in equality and participating in sport herself, that she will be a great advocate to increase participation of all under-represented groups. Disabled people are still half as likely to be active as non-disabled people, so there is a significant amount of work to do to ensure everyone is given equal access to opportunities. As the national body, dedicated to disabled people in sport and physical activity across England, we look forward to working with and supporting Helen closely as she begins her new role.”

Any EFDS enquiries should be directed to Sarah Marl, Marketing and Communications Manager.
