Merseyside Open Boccia Championships a great success

On Sunday 6 October the Merseyside Open Boccia Tournament took place at Greenbank Sports Academy Liverpool. Involving over 100 competitors from across the North West and North Wales, with the furthest group travelling from the East Midlands. Merseyside clubs attending were Moreton, Fairfield, Greenbank, Sedburn Academy and Cambridge Road.

Competitors are classified into impairment groups from BC 1-3 and BG 5-8 in junior and senior groups. Maureen Moscrop from Sedburn in Knowsley said:

“There’s a lot of new teams taking part this year and it’s great to have competitors here from all over the North West. I’m just glad people are putting on events like this.”

Once the group stages were complete the boccia athletes entered the business end of the competition battling it out for a place in the final. Special mention goes out to Adam Bloor of Cheshire and Beth Foster of East Midlands who kept the crowd entertained with some fantastic skill in the junior final.

The senior final between Gill Speight and Katherine Edge was particularly gripping as the players were so closely matched. The competition had to go to a tie break decider with Gill taking first place.

Steve Sullivan, Event Organiser from Merseyside Sports Partnership added:

“Congratulations to all the players who took part in a highly competitive and friendly competition. A huge thank you to support staff and coaches for getting the players so well prepared for the event and encouraging fair play throughout the day. We hope to encourage further development of this event for 2014 and look forward to see so many talented athletes participating again.”
