Wheelchair treadmill proving huge success at Portway Lifestyle Centre

Portway Lifestyle Centre, in Oldbury, is one of the leading inclusive facilities in the UK having been awarded the top level of the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) Mark in recognition of the centre’s outstanding commitment to inclusion.

Invictus Active Trainer wheelchair treadmill

One of their key pieces of equipment they have available is the Invictus Active Trainer - wheelchair treadmill - which they have been using for over 12 months and it is proving a huge success amongst wheelchair users looking for the answer to cardio fitness.

The treadmill is compact, portable and suitable for any manual wheelchair, allowing the user to easy access the equipment and start exercising. It also has the ability to connect to a mobile phone app and record speed, distance, heart rate and calories burnt - recording all the data and monitoring progress.

The equipment was developed by Invictus Active, founded by Scott and Paul who are both full time wheelchair users following spinal injury. They have won several awards and recognition for the treadmill and how it is helping wheelchair users both in the home and commercial gym environment.

Within Portway Lifestyle Centre the treadmill is set-up permanently and accessible to all members who wish to use it. It also forms part of the regular inclusive gym sessions that the centre runs. Another exciting development is it is enabling wheelchair users to take part in traditional bike spin classes, the treadmill can be set-up next to the bikes - inclusivity at it’s best!

John Harling, Facility Manager at Portway Lifestyle Centre said:

"The feedback we received from our wheelchair user customers was good, it is a piece of equipment they can easily use to enhance their daily gym workout."

Portway Fitness Instructor, Wendy Hall said:

"It's great for wheelchair cardio and you are using muscles that some don't normally get to use."
