Activity Alliance celebrates inclusive PE on World Children's Day

Today is World Children’s Day - a day for children, by children. Established in 1954 and held on 20 November each year, World Children’s Day looks to build a world where every child can fulfil their potential. To celebrate, Activity Alliance hears from school children about how much they enjoy inclusive PE lessons thanks to Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training programme.

Earlier this year, Activity Alliance spoke to a group of Year 7 and 8 pupils from Blessed George Napier School who shared their positive experiences of inclusive PE lessons, as a result of their teachers attending a Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training workshop.

Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training programme provides free face-to-face training to existing and trainee teachers, and school staff to deliver high quality inclusive PE to young disabled people in mainstream primary and secondary schools. It aims to improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of school staff to include all pupils in curriculum PE and ensure that all pupils are appropriately challenged and supported.

Sam told us why inclusive PE lessons are important, he said:

"Inclusive PE is important to ensure everyone is included and nobody feels left out. This makes PE lessons more fun."

Mysti added:

"Now that my teacher has attended a Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training workshop, PE lessons are a lot more relaxed and everyone can just have fun. It is no longer just about being good at sport but rather about enjoying coming together and participating in physical activity with my classmates."

Patrick explained that taking part in inclusive PE lessons has taught him about different impairments groups:

"Now that PE lessons are more inclusive, I have been able to meet new people and learn about their disabilities. Since I have been taking part in PE lessons with disabled classmates, I have learnt that even though some pupils may have a disability, they are still able to be in the same PE lesson as their non-disabled peers."
