People with dementia supported through Active Cumbria's Dancing Recall

Active Cumbria's Dancing Recall week group programmes are helping those affected by dementia, and their carers, to lead more fulfilling and active lives. They aim to improve concentration and responsiveness as well as overall mobility, enabling people to express themselves more fully in a safe and fun atmosphere.

Dance can help people living with dementia lead more active, independent and fulfilled lives. Growing evidence from worldwide research shows that dance really can help people with dementia.

This is an ‘open to all’ and free of charge programme for those living in Cumbria. You do not need to be referred by a GP or consultant. Programme sessions will be taking place in all six districts of the county however, spaces are limited so early registration is advisable. No previous dance experience is necessary however, those attending sessions will be asked to provide medical history as part of their activity registration form.

'Dancing Recall' is a pilot project is managed by Active Cumbria and has been developed in partnership with Cumbria County Council, NHS Cumbria and Dance Cumbria (a consortium of local dance practitioners) as part of the Cumbria Dementia Strategy Action Plan. It is supported by Age UK and Alzheimer’s Society.

It is led and mentored by Daphne Cushnie, chartered neurological physiotherapist and community dance practitioner. The project take places weekly in the districts of South Lakeland and Barrow over an eight week period between September and November 2013, and will run in Allerdale, Copeland, Carlisle and Penrith between January and March 2014. It is delivered by a team of specially trained, experienced dance practitioners.

The overarching aim of this pilot project is to provide sustainable high quality community dance opportunities for people in Cumbria living with dementia, and for their families and carers. They hope to impart to each participant a sense of belonging and validation in a safe, structured and caring environment.

Please note that these activities are open to non-dancers or those who have not had much previous experience of dancing. It is the intention of partners within this project to secure additional resource to ensure that further sessions can be provided beyond March 2014.
