British Blind Sport to hold First Steps into Sport Family Day

After the outstanding success of their First Steps project in Yorkshire, British Blind Sport is pleased to announce it will host a new family sports day on Sunday 3 February in York. The event will enable more children aged 3-11 years old with a visual impairment take their first steps into sport, whilst supporting their families with information about local opportunities.

The British Blind Sport First Steps project was first piloted in Scotland and after positive results and feedback was launched in Yorkshire in May 2018, to support an additional 50 families. The aim of the project is to improve the lives of children with sight loss by developing their skills and confidence, and supporting them to take up local community activities.

Participants of the First Steps project receive a First Steps activity pack including an audible ball, sticker pack and activity book that provides families with fun ideas to try. In addition, families receive support from our First Steps Coordinator, who works closely with them to get the most of the pack and enable visually impaired children to have fun and enjoy being active. When the time is right, our First Steps Coordinator identifies and connects families with local services and opportunities, helping the children to take their first steps towards an active lifestyle.

First Steps into Sport Family Day

British Blind Sport is welcoming all First Steps Yorkshire participants, along with other local  families who have a visually impaired child to come along to their first ever First Steps into Sport Family Day. On the day there will be activities delivered by experienced coaches for the children and their siblings.
