Build a ‘sporting habit for life’ through Inclusive PE

On Tuesday 12 February, Minister for Sport, Mims Davies, called for all schools to ensure that children are "physically literate". Davies says young people need the "fundamental" skills needed in order to build "a sporting habit for life". Activity Alliance believes a positive experience in PE and school sport plays a critical role in shaping life-long participation and access to sporting pathways for all young people.

This is a belief echoed through the Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training – a programme managed by Activity Alliance and delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust and the home countries.

While there are some, undoubtedly, outstanding examples of inclusive Physical Education and school sport for disabled children, Activity Alliance wants to ensure there are more opportunities available.

The Inclusive PE training programme provides free training and resources to support teachers, trainee teachers and school staff to provide high-quality Physical Education for all pupils. It is a free three-hour workshop, supported by online eLearning module. The training supports participants to feel more confident, knowledgeable and skilled so they can provide an inclusive and enjoyable PE experience.

Since the programme became part of the Paralympic legacy in 2012, over 12,500 have attended a Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training workshop across the UK.

  • The number of participants, who rated their confidence, skills and knowledge as good or excellent, increased by almost double (43%) following the workshop.
  • Nine in ten participants agreed they learnt new ideas and strategies to deliver inclusive PE lessons.
  • More than eight in ten (83%) of participants state the workshop was useful.

Ahead of speaking at UK Sport’s launch of their future funding strategy, Davies stated:

"As a minimum, schools must ensure children are physically literate. They need to learn how to run, jump, throw, catch. All of these things are fundamental to building a sporting habit for life. To achieve this we need schools to deliver high quality sport and physical activity throughout the school day and ensure that all children have a positive first experience of sport.”

The Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training programme have received extremely positive feedback from Mike, a primary teacher from the West Midlands. He said:

“I thought the workshop was very insightful and useful. I intend to implement what I learnt attending a workshop when delivering PE lessons in the future.”

Matthew, a Trainee Teacher from Manchester added:

“Now I’ve attended a Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training workshop, I will now approach all of my PE lessons with the STEP acronym (Space, Task, Equipment, People) in mind. In doing so, I will be able to adapt my lessons to ensure all students are fully involved and appropriately challenged.”

Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training workshops take place across the UK. To search and book on to a workshop in your area, please visit the website, where you can also access a range or resources and online eLearning module.
