Para-badminton stars produce stunning World's display

England produced some brilliant performances at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships, winning an incredible 11 medals in Dortmund at the weekend.

Having returned from the World Championships in Guatamala with five world medals two seasons ago, the squad surpassed all expectations to record the magnificent medal haul this time around.

With 248 Para-Badminton players from 38 different countries competing for world titles in Germany, it was an entry that made the 2013 Championships the largest in history.

Andrew Martin and Rachel Choong led the way for England, winning two gold medals each.

Martin paired up with Oliver Clarke in the SS 6 Men’s Doubles to take the title as well as partnering Choong in the SS 6 Mixed Doubles event where they overcame England’s Jack Shephard and Rebecca Bedford who won silver. 

Choong then also won the SS 6 Women’s Singles gold, beating fellow countryman Rebecca Bedford 21-8, 21-12 in the final. 

There was also a silver medal for Martin in the SS 6 Men’s Singles. In the WH 2 Men’s Doubles event, England’s Gobi Ranganathan and Martin Rooke also took the silver, losing out to Korea’s Kim Jungiun and Kim Kyunghoon, 21-14, 21-19 in the final.

As well as the Championships taking place at the weekend, the BWF also announced the four-person BWF Para-Badminton Athletes’ Commission, elected by the players competing at the World Championships.

England had two players elected onto the Commission with Antony Forster and Martin Rooke joining Richard Perot of France (chair) and Malaysia’s Yau Tiam Ann.
