Hampshire and Isle of Wight: latest news on sport for disabled people

Sport Hampshire and Isle of Wight is one of the English Federation of Disability Sport's focus County Sports Partnerships. Below is their latest news on sport for disabled people.

Disability Diving Taster Sessions

There is a new opportunity for disabled children to get involved in springboard/high board diving at The Quays in Southampton. The tasters run on Saturdays at 5–5.30pm and will cost £3.50

Participants should be aged between 6 and 19 years and will need to be able to swim at least 25m unaided, to be confident in deep water and to be happy to swim without goggles. Please contact Rachel on 023 8072 0922 / 023 8072 0906 or email

Wheelpower events

Junior Sports Camp supported by the Kidz in Sport Trust

The Sports Camp provides the opportunity to receive coaching and have a go at a number of Sports. It is being held on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 November for 11 to 18 year olds.

Impairment group: Those with a physical impairment such as spinal cord injury, spinia bifida, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.


Primary Sports Camp

The Sports Camp is a great way to introduce disabled children to a wide variety of sports in a safe, friendly and completely inclusive environment. it is being held on Saturday 22 March 2014 for 6 to 11 year olds.

Impairment group: Those with a physical (such as spinal cord injury, spina bifida, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy) or mild sensory impairment.

Inclusion Workshop

The inclusion workshop is on Tuesday 10 December between 1-4pm at Speaking Space, Ower, and is an introduction to using symbols within your setting and an introduction to producing accessible information to promote your activities. AthleFIT leaders workshop

AthleFIT is a fun, non-competitive fitness activity linked to athletics. There is a FREE workshop on Thursday 19 December from 10am-1pm at Basingstoke Sports Centre. An example of AthleFIT is shown on a video, which you can see by clicking here. 

Please note that participants of this workshop must hold either a level 1 NGB qualification (any sport) or a Fitness Instructor qualification – the workshop is worth 3 REPS points.

Focus CSP

In July, EFDS announced the focus County Sports Partnerships (CSPs). Our dedicated Engagement Officers work with the chosen nine across England so they can receive more concentrated support to increase disabled people’s participation at a local level. Sport Hampshire and Isle of Wight was a chosen CSP and Jon Whittingham is the Engagement Officer supporting their work.
