Jones and Hanson celebrate success at Gloucestershire Awards

Scott Jones celebrated a “surprise” success as he was named Sports Personality of the Year at the Gloucester Citizen and Gloucestershire Echo Sports Awards. The Cleeve School pupil picked up his award at a glittering ceremony at Hatherley Manor hotel.

In 2013 Scott qualified for the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships, selected for the F34 shot put. At the event he threw a new world record in his classification, winning gold and becoming the new world champion. It was this achievement which impressed the judging panel. The fifteen year old said:

“To win this award means a lot to me. I didn’t think I was going to win, so I’m quite surprised. I was a finalist for two other awards and I was getting quite nervous, but I’m glad I won. It’s very nice to be recognised by the county.”

Rugby league star James Jones-Buchanan was the speaker for the evening.

In an entertaining speech, the Leeds Rhino paid a glowing tribute to the volunteers who give up their time to run clubs and teams throughout the county.

Caroline Mackenzie was thrilled to win the Outstanding Services to Sport in Gloucestershire Award. The long-serving Pate’s Grammar PE teacher, said:

“Looking around the room I knew so many people from so many spheres of sport in Gloucestershire and actually, that is a really nice thing. You get a nice warm feeling from knowing that and feeling like that are so many people from Gloucestershire who are with you and know you, and are working towards the same goal.”

Levana Hanson received a rousing ovation after she was named the winner of the Disability Sports Performer of the Year Award. Hanson, a member of Gloucester Swimming Club, said:

"I am so happy, I never thought I’d win. It came as a real shock. The evening has been amazing. I don’t know what’s next, I’m just going to keep training as hard as I can.”
