Camden's 'Active for All' programme launched

Helen Turner, a British wheelchair athlete, joined Councillor Tulip Siddiq in launching Camden's new disability sports programme Active for All on Saturday 23 November.

Active for All encourages young disabled people aged 14 to 25 to take part in sports and physical activity. Sport England and supported by Pro-Active Camden, strategic partners.

Adapted sports sessions

There were a whole range of specially adapted sports taster sessions on offer throughout the afternoon at Swiss Cottage leisure centre from climbing to swimming.

The sessions were rotated so that all participants had a chance to try different sports. Polybat, which is similar to table tennis but played with bats, proved a real winner. The dance session was also extremely popular, with almost everyone taking the chance to try modern street dance.

Helen joined in the fun by playing table cricket and polybat with young people who gave her a run for her money. She said:

“It’s wonderful to see such enthusiasm and interest, and it’s evident that the 2012 Paralympic spirit is alive and thriving in Camden”.

Hub clubs

There will be weekly ‘hub clubs’ on Saturdays at Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, with a set timetable of adapted sports and activities designed to suit all abilities. The project aims to develop other similar opportunities at community venues in London.
