New resource supports health professionals in Yorkshire and Humber

Public Health England Yorkshire and Humber publishes new online resource to tackle physical activity inequalities. Developed in collaboration with Activity Alliance, the resource acts as a ‘one stop shop’ for public health professionals to support their work to reduce health inequalities across the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Collaborated with the Yorkshire and Humber Public Health Network to publish a new online resource for health professionals to support their work to reduce health inequalities across the region.

Launched earlier this month, the new physical activity and inequalities online resource is hosted on the Yorkshire and Humber Public Health Network website. It pulls together research and evidence on population groups who are less active because of the inequalities they experience and associated recommendations. It also includes detailed insight on the impact of coronavirus on people’s physical activity levels. Public Health England hopes the resource will support health professionals to engage more people in physical activity and support the region’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Activity Alliance leads the way in research and insight on disabled people’s involvement in sport and activity. Before the crisis many disabled people faced real challenges to accessing opportunities to be active. And now, in the wake of the pandemic inequalities have widened further. Since March 2020, we have published research and resources to help those working in health, sport, and leisure, to understand the wider impact of COVID-19 on disabled people’s activity levels.

The online resource hub has a section specifically on disabled people’s experiences and feature many of our recent publications, including:

  • Impact of COVID-19 on disabled people report (March 2021)
  • Annual Disability and Activity Survey 2020-21 report
  • Intersectionality: Taking a person-centred approach resource (2020)

Catherine Slater, Engagement Team Leader, worked closely with Public Health England Yorkshire and Humber to develop this new online resource hub. She said:

"We know health professionals are key influencers in disabled people’s lives. So, it is vital they understand the issues and inequalities disabled people face when it comes to sport and activity. I hope this resource supports health professionals to embed inclusive practice into their work and deliver better experiences for disabled people."
