Groups triumph at Accessible Britain Challenge Awards

Groups from across the country have been honoured at the Accessible Britain Challenge Awards 2015, which took place earlier today at the Houses of Parliament.

The YMCA Community Gym in Peterborough and London-based live music accessibility charity Attitude is Everything triumphed in their categories, alongside the Safe Place Scheme from Poole and the Corporate Disability Forum based in west Cheshire.

A number of other shortlisted projects were highly commended for the difference they have made to disabled people’s lives and enjoyment.

Minister of State for Disabled People Mark Harper said:

"What’s so special about these awards is that nominations were made by disabled individuals or organisations. People came forward to nominate these finalists because they know from first-hand experience that the work they do is life-changing. I hope this will encourage more organisations to think about the needs of disabled people and help drive the UK forward to become a truly Disability Confident nation."

The Accessible Britain Challenge was launched in September. Its vision is for communities to become more inclusive and accessible by engaging and working with disabled people.

The Accessible Britain Challenge aims to break down many barriers so disabled people can be full and active contributors in the community.

The English Federation of Disability Sport was keen to share some of the national charity's work and the Inclusive Communications Guide is among the better practice examples to support others. You can find it in this section of The Challenge.

The Inclusive Communications Guide is also among a strong list of contenders for the Best Diversity Resource at the Excellence in Diversity Awards 2015. The ceremony is in May.
