British Blind Sport hold National VI Youth Swimming Gala

On Wednesday 11 March, the Tudor Grange Leisure Centre in Solihull was brimming with excitement and anticipation, as keen swimmers from across the country competed in the British Blind Sport (BBS) National VI Youth Swimming Gala.

Swimmers aged 9 to 17 participated in a number of races to showcase their skills in free style, breast stroke, backstroke, butterfly and relay. The event aimed to encourage fun and friendly competition among blind or partially sighted young people of all skill levels and abilities.

The event received a host of positive feedback from the participants, coaches, volunteers, and everyone who came to support. Here's what some people had to say about the event:

'It’s fantastic to have an event that kids can compete in. To see all the children enjoying themselves is brilliant. I wish there were more events like this.' Lucy, mother of a participant.

'It's the best gala I’ve been to this year; it was full of atmosphere.' Kian Saville, participant.

'The parents have been saying that there isn’t anything really like this, so I think it’s a great opportunity.' Lauren Whiteman, event volunteer.

A number of awards were given out on the day to participants in recognition of their achievements. Nathaniel Costigan was awarded the BBS Male Swimmer of the Day, while Grace Courtney was awarded the Female Swimmer of the Day. Both produced excellent performances in their respective races. Amy Turnham, Sydney Howard and Jack Mockett each received a BBS Outstanding Achievement Award for their superb efforts and commitment at the event. Jack set a new BBS record time in the under 17 non-elite 25m breast stroke.

Reflecting on a great event, Ross Hayward, Participation Delivery Officer at British Blind Sport, said:

'The enthusiasm and effort put in by all of the participants was excellent to see. This event provides a great opportunity for young people with a visual impairment to compete against their peers in a VI friendly environment. The feedback we have obtained from participants and parents was very positive and rewarding. The support staff and volunteers involved had a hugely positive impact on the day and made it a very successful event.'

British Blind Sport was delighted with the turnout at this event and would like to thank the individuals that helped make this event possible and congratulations to all of the swimmers that took part.
