International Nurses' Day: Inclusive Community Training's role

Today is International Nurses' Day. It celebrates the contribution nurses make to society, coincides with the birth date of Florence Nightingale, and the Royal College of Nursing are marking the day with a #WhyINurse social media campaign.

The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) work closely with those from the healthcare profession, and have equipped many of those in the industry with useful and relevant new skills through Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive Community Training.

In December, 43 physiotherapy students from the University of Nottingham attended a Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training workshop, delivered in partnership between EFDS and sports coach UK.

Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training, part of Active Kids for All scheme, is a creative, informal and informative workshop. It is designed to improve the skills and confidence of those who support disabled people to be more active.

Described as “fun, interactive and interesting” by past participants, Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training has dozens of further sessions arranged for 2015.

The Nottingham workshop was the first course delivered solely to student physiotherapists, but the participant feedback received highlighted the importance of this type of training:

“I felt it was above and beyond what I expected. It was fun and I learnt many ways to modify activities and it made me think of things from a different perspective.”

“It opened my eyes to all the different modifications in sport that can be applied. I thoroughly enjoyed the session. The leaders were great, enthusiastic and motivating, and it made me realise that there is no such thing as inclusion, because if you are talking about inclusion, it means you have been excluding people before.”

Workshops have also in the past been delivered to nurses who work in day centres and care homes, with Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training a versatile course designed for a wide range of participants.

This week is also Children's Hospice Week, the UK's only awareness raising and fundraising week for children with life-limiting conditions and the services, like children's hospices, that support them.

Why not a look at the information available of the EFDS website and consider whether your peers in the healthcare profession could benefit from learning how to help disabled people to be active for life.
