Workshop dates announced for “Getting Active Outdoors” research report

The Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) and Sport England have announced workshop dates for “Getting Active Outdoors” research report.

The research was commissioned by Sport England, and delivered by the OIA. “Getting Active Outdoors: A study of demography, motivation, participation and provision in outdoor sport and recreation in England” was officially launched by Jennie Price, CEO of Sport England, and OIA CEO Andrew Denton at an ‘invitation only’ event for senior personnel in central London on 9 June. It examines the demand and supply of outdoor provision and takes an in-depth look at the profile of the outdoor consumer.

Following the official launch, a series of ten free interactive day workshops will take place over the summer across England, allowing delegates from various sectors to learn how best to use and implement the report’s findings.

The (provisional) dates and locations are as follows:

Manchester - Thursday 25 June 2015
London - Friday 26 June 2015
Loughborough - Tuesday 30 June 2015
Sheffield - Wednesday 1 July 2015
Whitby - Thursday 2 July 2015
Ambleside - Tuesday 21 July 2015
Cambridge - Thursday 23 July 2015
Maidenhead - Wednesday 19 August 2015
Bristol - Wednesday 26 August 2015
London - Thursday 10 September 2015

Developed to enhance Sport England’s understanding of the outdoor sector and the potential it holds for getting people more active, more often, Sport England and the OIA believe the report is the broadest ever undertaken in the sector to date.

Its findings will prove invaluable to stakeholders, including governing bodies of sport and commercial organisations involved in the outdoor recreation market. Each workshop will be delivered by the OIA with support from Sport England, and will share the findings about the outdoors activity market, its scale, its stakeholders, the trends and opportunities. The workshops will also cover what motivates people to be active in the outdoors, and how provision can be mapped against participation to identify gaps and opportunities.

Sport England CEO, Jennie Price, said:

“Knowing what people want from their sporting experiences is essential if we’re going to make the opportunities absolutely right for them. That’s why I’m really excited about this research and the potential it has to help get more people active in the outdoors more often. This report will help us to understand further the outdoors market and the opportunities it presents.  It has great potential for the whole sector and I am keen to share it. The workshops will be a great opportunity for people to delve into the findings so I encourage you to sign up.”

OIA CEO Andrew Denton comments:

“This is a fundamental piece of research and will drive Sport England’s insight into the outdoor sector, highlighting some of the opportunities for increasing outdoor recreation and understanding participants. I would urge any organisation that has an interest in the outdoor sector to engage with its findings and attend one of the free workshops.”

You can download the report here. Delegate places for the ten regional workshops are available free to members on a first come basis and will include lunch and refreshments throughout the day, as well as free access to the report.
