Surrey teachers benefit from free Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training

Over 5,000 teachers, trainee teachers and school staff have attended a Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training workshop.

In one recent example, a group of 12 primary school teachers and teaching assistants from Surrey attended the free, five hour workshop.

Jo Eames, Director of Sport and Project Ability Lead at Valence School, who delivered the workshop, told the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS):

“The workshop was arranged by the local Primary Sport Development Officer and School Games Organiser to support school staff to feel more confident delivering inclusive PE lessons. The attendees were highly motivated and appreciated the importance of their role in including all pupils in PE; meaning they were very inquisitive and keen to get involved in the activities.”

The Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training Programme provides free training and resources for teachers, trainee teachers and school staff to provide a high quality PE curriculum for all young people. It is designed to improve confidence, knowledge and skill in including, challenging and progressing all pupils by embedding inclusive practice in planning, delivery and assessment.

Described as “highly enjoyable, relevant and informative” by past participants, numerous Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE Training workshops are being arranged for the next academic year.

The individuals who attended the workshop in Surrey told EFDS they found it extremely beneficial:

“Having the opportunity to put myself in the situation of learners was really useful; it made me think more about practical solutions to including everyone."

“Through the workshop we explored the use of inclusive vocabulary; it was such a simple but effective idea.”

“The training made me realise that making PE more inclusive is not scary and can be achieved more easily than I originally thought.”

Jo Eames continued:

“I have been delivering the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training for a number of years and think it is well designed. I really enjoy meeting the delegates in the morning and watching them gain in confidence throughout the day as they realise how easy it is to include all pupils in PE.

“I feel that if I can inspire just a small proportion of teachers and school staff to ensure all young disabled people in their own schools are participating and they are sharing good practice with their colleagues, then it is a valuable job done.”

Active Kids for All Inclusive PE Training has been established through a £1 million investment from Sainsbury’s. The four Home Country disability sport organisations alongside Sainsbury’s, with support of Paralympics GB and the Youth Sport Trust, have joined forces in its delivery.
