Sainsbury's Inclusive Community Training set for Somerset secondary school

A school in Somerset is set to introduce Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive Community Training to pupils from the beginning of the next academic year, after enjoying major success with the Youth Sport Trust’s volunteering initiative, Lead Your Generation: An Inclusive Future.

Royal High School Bath’s future participants will become the latest in a long line of people who have already benefited from the professional, practical and enjoyable workshop that makes up Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training.

In fact, more than 2,000 people have now completed the training, described as "fun, interactive and interesting" by past participants.

Inclusive Future, meanwhile, is a leadership and volunteering scheme for young people, with a special emphasis on inclusion.

Zoe Sheffield, Director of Outreach at Royal High, co-ordinates the Inclusive Futures work at her school and will also work with the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) to establish Sainsbury's Inclusive Community Training.

Zoe contacted the EFDS to praise one student in particular - Sophie Churchill of Year 10, whose work as a Lead Your Generation volunteer particularly stood out:

“We are really proud of Sophie, who was one of our volunteers at the recent Playground to Podium disability sport event. Sophie worked with a young wheelchair-user on the day, Kate, who gained so much confidence with Sophie’s encouragement that she has asked if Sophie might accompany her to attend the Team Bath Tribe netball club at Bath University.

“This will be the first time Kate has attended a mainstream sports club and the Inclusive Future team will be supporting Sophie in her role as a mentor. This is a remarkable story, demonstrating the impact and difference girls at the Royal High School Bath are making to the lives of others and we would like to commend Sophie.”

Becca Higgs, Inclusive Futures co-ordinator for the Youth Sport Trust, added:

“We are really impressed and proud of Sophie. Kate loves having Sophie along to help and Sophie has already signed up to at the Youth Sport Trust Regional Camp. We are looking forward to the EFDS courses we plan to run next academic year for our young leaders and teachers.”

Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training, part of Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All, will be made available to pupils just like Sophie from September.

It is a creative, informal and informative workshop. It consists of three hours of practical training, supplemented by online resources, and it is designed to improve the skills and confidence of those who support disabled people to be more active.

In addition, Royal High School Bath plan to co-ordinate a session of Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE for physical education staff both from the school and the surrounding area.
