Great Britain gets ready to celebrate National Paralympic Day 2015

Cheer on sporting heroes and take part in a range of family games and entertainment, at one of the biggest events of the summer. Celebrate National Paralympic Day 2015 at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Sunday 26 July.

A celebration of the Paralympic movement and an opportunity for people in the UK to come together to relive the magic of London 2012. This weekend National Paralympic Day will be celebrated for the third time since the British public came together to make the home Games of 2012 the most successful in history.

In London, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will provide the focal point of the National Paralympic Day action. There will be plenty of exciting activities for visitors to enjoy, including the chance to meet some of their Paralympic heroes, try out a range of sports and enjoy the Mayor of London’s Liberty Festival, which will be presenting another exciting line-up of deaf and disabled artists, musicians and performers.

In addition to the Mayor of London's Liberty Festival, fans can also watch GB athletes compete in both swimming and athletics. Paralympic and World medallists will be competing in world class competitions in both the former London 2012 Aquatic Centre and former Olympic Stadium this weekend.

Paralympic Champion, Jonnie Peacock (pictured) said:

'I can’t wait to be back at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to celebrate National Paralympic Day 2015. It’s a great family day out, and I’m thrilled that Athletics is joining Swimming on the competition programme this year. People should definitely get their tickets to ensure the home crowd make plenty of noise and give their athletes the home advantage.'

This year National Paralympic Day goes regional, with three cities hosting regional events on Sunday in Nottingham, Brighton and Plymouth. Local residents are invited to come down and enjoy free interactive and fun activities from 10am – 5pm. Fans – young and old, disabled and non-disabled people – are all encouraged to have a go and test their skills to learn more about some of the extraordinary talents of our Paralympic athletes, plus find out how they can get more active.

Ben Quilter, a London 2012 bronze medallist in judo who was born and raised in Brighton, was delighted to see National Paralympic Day heading to his hometown. He said:

'I’m really looking forward to National Paralympic Day in Brighton, it’s going to be a really fun day and there will be plenty of opportunities for people to come along to try out disability sport and find out more about the Paralympics.
'It means so much to me that this is all happening in my home town, and I hope lots of people take a little bit of time out of their day to come along and join us.'

Local sports clubs around the UK can also get involved in celebrations this weekend by hosting their own event, whether that be a come and try session, a cake sale, or a Paralympic quiz.

EFDS has supported National Paralympic Day to ensure more disabled people can access the celebration events around the country. As well as adding the events on our search page, we teamed up with the British Paralympic Association to support clubs. Those who registered were sent EFDS's guide to organising more inclusive and accessible events. It includes top tips on how to plan, what additional things to think about and who can support disabled people to be active in their local area after the celebration Day.

National Paralympic Day is generously supported by Spirit of 2012, a trust established by the Big Lottery Fund to recreate the spirit that radiated from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics. Spirit is committed to funding partners who help challenge perceptions of disability.
