GB team enjoy strong start at Special Olympics World Summer Games

As the sun shines over Los Angeles, athletes from the Special Olympics GB team have enjoyed a strong start at the 2015 World Summer Games, picking up 48 medals in the first three days of competition.

The GB team have enjoyed early success winning 21 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze medals after the first three days of competition at the World Summer Games. The team of over 100 athletes with a learning disability from England, Scotland and Wales are competing in 19 sports at the games.

The rhythmic gymnastics team put on an impressive display, taking home 36 medals over two days of competition. Felicity Martin (pictured right) made it into the highest division for every routine, a fantastic achievement. She then went on to win gold for her rope routine, earning her the title of overall world champion in level three rope. Phoebe Lowe also won three gold and two silver medals, with her gold medals coming in the ribbon, ball and all round competitions.

Special Olympics GB's Ruairidh Brown (pictured below) and Daniel Weston took to their bikes for the 25km road race. Cycling around the street of Alamitos Beach, Ruairidh crossed the finish line to win a silver medal, with Daniel close behind in 3rd place taking the bronze.

Both GB's 11-a-side and unified football teams have started strongly at the games. With a 7-1 win over Bharat in the 11-a-side competition and another 5-0 win over Bharat in the unified competition.

At the Galen Center, usually home to the University of Southern California men's and women's basketball teams, the GB team started well with a 34-25 win over Latvia. Next up for them is a match against Italy tomorrow.
