Sainsbury's Inclusive Community Training ideal for volunteers

This week sees continued action from Nottingham as the 2015 Cerebral Palsy International Sport and Recreation Association (CPISRA) World Games is in full swing.

Competitors will compete from all over the world in a range of sports including Athletics, Bowls, 7-a-side Football Under 19 World Championships and two demonstration sports of Para Taekwondo and Table Cricket.

The World Games is running a comprehensive Games Starters Volunteering Programme, which will give people from across the country the opportunity to get involved in this international event as Games Starters.

It consists of three hours of practical training, supplemented by online resources, and is designed to improve the skills and confidence of those who support disabled people to be more active.

The training is for those who support disabled people of all ages within the community and have an opportunity to put the training into practice. For example; carers, support workers, parents, volunteers and community groups and organisations. The workshop is not for qualified sports coaches.

Participant numbers have now passed 2,200 since Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training was launched, and with many more sessions booked across the country those figures will continue to rise.

Described as "fun, interactive and interesting" by past participants, a recent attendee called Charlotte, a residential services employee who enjoyed a workshop earlier this summer, told the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS):

“I learned a lot of useful tips and ways to help everyone get involved in sports and physical activity. I learned how to adapt more sports and I’ve learned ways in which to adapt so that individuals are not barred from the activity, but are given a chance to achieve their maximum potential.

“Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training is a very good course, with great tutors and well-prepared.”

County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) work in conjunction with EFDS to co-ordinate workshops in their areas.

At the CPISRA World Games Sport, local CSP Sport Nottinghamshire have supported with the management of a volunteer programme, as well as the safeguarding and welfare of the event alongside Cerebal Palsy Sport, the National Disability Sports Organisation for people who have cerebral palsy.

Sport Nottinghamshire have been a key helper in establishing the Nottingham 2015 Games Starters, a 200-strong volunteer workforce that will play a vital role during the Games.

CPISRA World Games Event Director, Ali Talbot, said:

"The welfare of everyone involved in the Games, especially our athletes and teams is of the utmost importance.

"Thanks to the support of Sport Nottinghamshire we can ensure that the Games will run smoothly and all those visiting, whether volunteers, athletes or spectators can enjoy the Games in a safe environment.”
