GB team win six medals at World Deaf Swimming Championships 2015

The GB Deaf Swimming Squad finish in seventh place at World Deaf Swimming Championships in San Antonio, Texas - winning six medals and breaking multiple world and national records in the process.

After a week of tough competition at the World Deaf Swimming Championships 2015, Great Britain finish in seventh place overall in the medals table with 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals.

During the final two days of competition, Great Britain picked up a silver medal through Danielle Joyce in the 50m backstroke final. Having set a new World record in the heats, Danielle lined up for the final, as the crowd watched on in anticipation of an exciting race.

In an unbelievably close final, Danielle was just pipped to the gold medal by Russia's Eleonora Brykanova. It was an incredibly quick race, with both Danielle and Eleonora dipping under the World record time that Danielle set during the heats.

Winning silver takes Danielle's medal count up to four for the championships. Two bronze medals in the 200m backstroke and mixed 4 x 100m freestyle relay, and a gold medal for her emphatic victory in the 100m backstroke, during which she set a new World record.

Danielle said:

“I am leaving my first ever World Championships with gold, silver and two bronze and a world record. I’m over the moon with my swims. The support here and back home has been phenomenal."

Jack McCornish won 3 bronze medals at the Championships, taking third spot on the podium in the men's 400m individual medley, 400m freestyle and mixed 4 x 100m freestyle relay with Tom Baxter, Emily Noden and Danielle Joyce.

The GB Squad have pushed themselves hard throughout the Championships, with many of them reaching finals, breaking national records and knocking seconds off their personal best times. The team's performance is encouraging and will see them build in this success as they continue to prepare for the 2017 Deaflympics.
