Targets smashed, over 7,500 teachers complete Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE

“The course gave us the confidence and knowledge needed to ensure that PE experiences are high quality for all of our pupils, whatever their ability.”

That’s the view of just one of over 7,500 PE teachers who, since 2012, have been trained across the UK through the Sainsbury’s Active Kids for All Inclusive PE workshops.

Exceeding the 7,275 target marks a significant achievement for the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), the Home Country Disability Sport Organisations and the Youth Sport Trust (YST). In partnership with Sainsbury’s and the British Paralympic Association, all organisations have worked together to support teachers’ training to engage and support the progression of all pupils within PE.

Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE, a Paralympic legacy initiative, provides free training and resources to trainee teachers, existing teachers and school staff. The workshops develop and improve the provision of high-quality inclusive PE for all young people within both primary and secondary schools.

Lucie Bouron, a 20-year-old YST Youth Board Member and table tennis player, said:

“PE helps so much with confidence and the feeling of being involved and included.  If I had been included in lessons when I was at school it would have made my life easier.
"When I was young it would have helped me make friends, but I didn’t get the same opportunities as other non-disabled pupils.”

It is estimated that over 500,000 young disabled people have been reached through this training. EFDS’s mission is to ensure experiences described by Lucie are a thing of the past. Please help us to achieve this by registering your interest.

Sainsbury's Inclusive PE aims to create a lasting legacy for young disabled people. Sainsbury’s has committed to investing over £1 million over five years to support this initiative.

Sarah Ellis, Head of Marketing Strategy, at Sainsbury’s, said:

“We are delighted so many teachers and pupils have benefitted from our Inclusive PE Training. The success of this programme will ensure the provision of high-quality PE for many more young people across the UK and has led to a wider scheme to inspire and enable active and healthy lifestyles for children of all abilities.
"New places are now available, so I would encourage more teachers to take the opportunity to sign up.”

Barry Horne, chief executive of EFDS on behalf of the Home Country Disability Sport Organisations, said:

“High quality, inclusive PE is essential to inspire and encourage young disabled people to lead full and active lives.  We are aware that whilst many teachers undoubtedly have the skills to include all young people within their lessons, few have the confidence to do so. The Sainsbury’s Inclusive PE training addresses this.
“We are really excited to see the impact of this initiative on the support of teachers and school staff and most importantly on the experiences of young disabled people.”

Recognising the impact the programme has had on the experiences of young disabled people in PE, Sainsbury’s have provided a further 1,800 places for teachers and school staff to benefit from both theory and practical resources supporting the needs of all pupils across the UK. Please register your interest now to avoid disappointment.
