Faye McClelland and Phil Hogg celebrate paratriathlon success
As the British Paratriathlon team maintained its position on top of the world, Faye McClelland and Phil Hogg were named British Triathlon Female and Male Paratriathletes of the Year at the British Triathlon Awards Dinner in Birmingham on Saturday 23 November 2012.
Faye McClelland is the only paratriathlete to have won a world title four years in a row. Competing in the Tri-4 category in Hyde Park in September, Faye was part of a brilliant 1-2-3 by the British team with Lauren Steadman and Clare Cunningham. Despite missing the European Championships this summer to focus on her University physiotherapy qualification, she came to London determined to win her fourth world title and achieved that in style.
Faye, who lives in Eastbourne, was delighted to win the award, commenting: “It feels immense, I’m really proud. It’s been a tough year for me, finishing my finals at University and trying to train for Worlds in September. I had tough competition, tougher than previous years and I’m delighted to have retained this title.
”It was brilliant to medal alongside Lauren and Clare, they both did equally well and we were all proud to represent Great Britain on the podium in London."
Phil was new to paratriathlon last year yet in his first ever triathlon he won the European title in Turkey and in his next race he won the Britishtitle in Liverpool. Phil came to paratriathlon through British Triathlon’s talent ID scheme, which continues to actively look for aspiring Rio 2016 medal winners. Phil has brought not only success, but also a fantastic work ethic and positive influence on everyone around him.
Phil, from Derby, added:
“I’m really chuffed to receive this award tonight. I’ve had an amazing season, I’ve trained really hard and I’m delighted with my results. So yes, I’m a happy man. I’m concentrating on Rio now, I think about it when I wake up in the morning and go to bed at night and I can picture myself competing for Great Britain in Rio at the first Paralympic Games for Triathlon.”
The Great Britain Paratriathlon Team won six world titles at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in London’s Hyde Park in September. To find out more about the Paratriathlon programme, visit: the British Triathlon website
