New magazine set to empower amputees

Emma Wilson was disappointed with constantly reading publications which only targeted amputees in the armed forces. As a young woman, she wanted to access up to date lifestyle and product news. Empower Magazine was born this year as a result of her desire to produce something which reached a lot more amputees and their networks.

During 2011, on a night out, Emma Wilson fell over and her injury led to a lower leg amputation. While waiting for her fitting at the local prosthetic centre, she noticed that there were no magazines in the waiting room that targeted the average amputee, but there were some great magazines for those in the forces.

The scenario gave Emma the idea to come up with something new. This year, Empower magazine was published for the first time to fill the gap in the market. It contains information and news for those who have either had an amputation or were born without a limb.

"I wanted there to be a magazine which could show and motivate other amputees just what was possible. There are some great organisations out there for amputees but a lot of people don’t know where to look for them. One of our main objectives was to help create a network of support and resources which amputees can access and tap into when they feel ready."

The first issue of the magazine is out now and has already been a great success. Empower's publishers have been overwhelmed by the amount of support they have received from companies.

"We would like to thank everyone who got involved and look forward to working with them on future issues. It was also nice to get feedback from our readers and we have taken a lot of the suggestion on board for the next issue."

Moving forward, the magazine will continue to have features on travel, motability, employment, sports, socialising, health and products as well as many interesting blogs. They are also keen to hear amputees' personal stories. There will also be a lot of personal stories from amputees. If you have any ideas or would like to share your story, please contact Rob Devitt.
