Activity Alliance fundraisers lace up for the virtual London Marathon

The 40th Virgin Money London Marathon 2020 takes place this Sunday (4 October). And for the first time ever it’s gone virtual. This year our fundraisers will be pounding the streets across the UK, and even the USA! All are passionate about supporting Activity Alliance’s work towards fairness for disabled people in sport and activity.

On asking why they chose to run for our charity and the impact they want to achieve, Kevin said:

“In the past I've tried loads of different sports and have pretty much taken it for granted that if I wanted to take part, or to try something different, that I could just give it a go. I hadn't realised how lucky I am when it comes to sport and activity opportunities. For many disabled people that this just isn't the case.
“My other reason to do the London Marathon is that I would be ticking off something that I really never thought that I was physically or mentally capable of.  Sometimes you surprise yourself as much as you surprise others when you complete these things. Now all I have to do is complete it!”

Seasoned runner and Activity Alliance long term supporter, John Somerville, will be taking on his seventh marathon for us:

“I absolutely love and believe in what you do as a charity. This year more than ever, it is a privilege to raise funds to help disabled people become more active.
It's been challenging enough for non-disabled people to stay active through lockdown and get back into gyms, so I can only imagine the barriers faced by disabled people in keeping fit and active. I really hope that the money I've raised can be used to lift the spirits of disabled people in the UK and help disabled people become more active.”

Jonathan will be taking on the streets of New Orleans for us! He said:

“Despite all the difficulties I've faced in training for this event in these unprecedented times, it's nothing compared to the challenges some face all the time. That's why I'm honoured to support Activity Alliance's mission to support disabled people to be and stay active for life."

The virtual 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon will take place on Sunday 4 October. Participants will have 23 hours 59 minutes and 59 seconds (from 00:00 to 23:59:59 BST) to complete the 26.2 miles. They can run, walk or jog – making the event the most inclusive London Marathon ever.

We wish all our brave and hardy marathon runners the very best of luck and will be by their side the whole way round their own virtual run. Thank you for your ongoing support, during what has been a challenging year for many.
