Gloucester Rugby launches wheelchair development programme

A new wheelchair rugby development programme has been launched by Gloucester Rugby, the University of Gloucestershire and Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby.

Gloucester Rugby has teamed up with Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby and the University of Gloucestershire to launch a wheelchair rugby development programme, offering opportunities for disabled people to get active and involved in the sport.

GBWR captain Alan Ash and London 2012 Paralympian Kylie Grimes joined Gloucester Rugby players Lua Lokotui and James Simpson-Daniel to celebrate the start of the new initiative, which launched at the university last week.

Forming part of the club’s community portfolio, the aim of the programme is to offer training and development opportunities for those who would like to participate in rugby, with the ultimate goal of establishing a strong wheelchair rugby club to compete at the highest level. David Pond, Chief Executive of GBWR, said:

"Gloucester is such a strong rugby city; it makes sense that Gloucester Rugby should get involved in wheelchair rugby. The support of the university means this new club will only go from strength to strength".

Students from the university will be contributing to the project by taking on roles as coaches, leaders and players, with weekly training sessions expected to start soon.
