Swimming silver for Tom Hamer in the Commonwealth Games

Fifteen year old Tom Hamer claimed a silver medal for Team England and a new British record at the Commonwealth Games tonight. Hamer, who was beaten to gold by Australia's Daniel Fox, made history when he took part in the first event ever at the Commonwealth Games for swimmers with a learning disability.

Welsh swimmer, Jack Thomas, took bronze in the Para-swimming S14 200m freestyle in a race which saw Fox set a new world record in the heats (one minute 57.16 seconds). Fox's time in the final was enough to secure him the victory, winning in 1:57.68, ahead of Hamer (2:00.27) and Thomas (2:01.27).

Hamer, who swims in Burnley time beat Dan Pepper's previous 2011 British record- 2:01.27.

Hamer and Thomas will be joining fellow national team mates and international rivals when they compete for Great Britain at the IPC Swimming European Championships. They take place in the Netherlands from 4-10 August.
