Golden success at Commonwealth Games on track and field

Dan Greaves was elated today when he claimed gold for Team England at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. His discus throw in the para-athletics F42/44 event sparked a night of glory.

Experienced Greaves, 31, beat Wales' team captain, Aled Davies, in a competitive event. Davies, competes in the F42 category and after the second round had the lead with 46.83m (1,012 points). However, Greaves, F44 category, responded positively in the third round with 59.21 (1,023 points). Greaves said:

"I wanted to put on a great performance out there. I knew I was in good shape and I can perform at the right time. We've competed against each other all season and it has been a battle and I knew Aled could have popped one out but when I threw 59m I thought I had a good chance of winning."

Team Scotland's Libby Clegg was also thrilled when she won the home nation's first athletics gold. She also set a season's best of 12.20 seconds in the T11/12 100m. The 24-year-old, who runs in the class for visually impaired runners, runs with the guide Mikail Huggins.

There was also a bronze and a season best for Wales's Rhys Jones in the T37 100m clocking 12.04. Double Paralympic champion, South Africa's Fanie van der Merwe won the race, before team-mate Charl du Toit in 11.65 seconds.

Greaves, Davies and Clegg will be competing in the IPC Athletics European Championships  in Swansea in August.
