Government releases School Sport and Activity Action Plan update

Today, the Department for Education published the School Sport and Activity Action Plan update.

The two-year plan aims to improve equal access and the quality of PE and sport in schools for all pupils. In response, Director of Partnerships at Activity Alliance, Ray Ashley said:

"We welcome this updated School Sport and Activity Action Plan, and the recognition that PE and sport are a vital part of a child’s life. As the leading voice for disabled people in sport and activity we must ensure that is the case for every child, and that plans like this make sure that disabled children do not miss out on high-quality experiences.
"We know how important positive PE experiences are in supporting children to go on to enjoy being active for life. Yet research shows not all young disabled people are included in PE and school sport. This is not right or fair – no child should be missing out or left on the side-lines.
"The delivery of programmes such as Inclusion 2024 are crucial. Teachers and staff have to feel confident and comfortable providing accessible, fun and inclusive PE. The programme aims to increase and improve opportunities for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to engage and participate in physical education and school sport.
"As mentioned in the update, we were proud to develop the Inclusion 2024 inclusive education hub in partnership with Youth Sport Trust and Department for Education. Education practitioners across England have access to all the essential resources for inclusive PE in one space.
"As with the Inclusion 2024 programme we are ready to work with partners to play our part in giving every child the opportunity to have a happy, healthy and active life. This must be backed by long-term investment and commitment across Government to tackle deep-rooted inequalities."

The updated plan includes details on new physical activity guidelines for disabled children and young disabled people. These guidelines are clear that disabled children benefit from physical activity as much as non-disabled children.
