Special Olympics Great Britain launch new club in North Devon

Special Olympics Great Britain is delighted to announce the launch of their newest club - Special Olympics North Devon. To mark the official opening Special Olympics GB and Active Devon held a sports taster session on Saturday 6 December.

Over 45 participants took part in a variety of sports sessions throughout the day, including shooting, football, tennis, boccia and table cricket. Feedback from relatives, friends and carers was extremely positive and grateful to have a new opportunity available for children and adults to take part in sport and physical activity.

Athletes played tennis under the expert guidance of the Devon and Cornwall Development Coaches, and they have already started talking about holding competitions and events with other clubs.

Many parents with the younger athletes were very impressed with the new Special Olympics GB set up and can now see a bright sporting future for their children.

Lorraine Harris, Development Coordinator at Active Devon, said:

“The whole team worked very hard to make the day a huge success together with expert advice from Special Olympics stalwart and veteran Val Hanover – recently recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.  A special thank you to all of the volunteers who made the day possible, 19 in total, all offering expert advice in specific areas."

She added:

“The club will be fully inclusive and offer children and adults the opportunity to train and take part in both competitive and non-competitive sport. We are hoping to link with other clubs in the area who would like to grow inclusive programme of sports. We will give participants the chance link with other Special Olympics clubs within Devon and my hopes are to have representation from North Devon at the National Games in Sheffield which take part in 2017.”

The club is being facilitated by Active Devon who are working to develop a range of opportunities across the region for those with physical and intellectual impairments.
