Nominations open for England Athletics Regional Council elections

Are you someone who cares passionately about athletics? Do you know someone who is able to represent the views of the grassroots of the sport in your area? Do you want to be part of the decision making process within England Athletics? Elections to England’s nine regional councils are to be held in February/March next year and nominations are now open in advance of this.

Club secretaries will shortly be receiving nomination forms and supporting information so that all clubs and other affiliated organisations are able to nominate those that they believe will best represent their views and interests.

Regional Councils play a very important role in the development of the sport and in shaping the work of England Athletics. Over the past two years the National Council, formed of the Chairs of the nine England Regional Councils, has worked hard to provide an effective voice for the volunteers within athletics. It is the main vehicle by which individuals and clubs are able to influence the development of strategy and the delivery of services. All nine regions have vacancies that must be filled in this election.

Please note, nomination can only be proposed and supported by clubs or affiliated bodies, not by individuals.

Tony Shiret, Chair of the National Council, says:

"Nominations are needed in all regions from all sectors of athletics to ensure that the membership of Councils is representative of the whole sport within each region. What we really want are motivated people who want to make a difference. Ideally we want to identify and engage with the next generation of leaders in our sport."

He continued:

"It is important that all councils are fully constituted and that affiliated clubs (and their members) are active in nominating, and voting for, those people who they believe will represent their views effectively. This gives the Council system greater credibility in claiming to represent the sport and its excellent volunteer base. This is not about seat-filling and endless committees. It is our chance to have real influence in the decisions that affect our clubs and members. This is already happening and we must now act together to get our best people into the Council system."

If you know of someone who is passionate about our sport and has the skills, drive and commitment to make a difference, then you can nominate them for a place on your regional council.

Help England Athletics by communicating this to your key members and encouraging them to stand.
