Sainsbury's Inclusive Community Training: Adam's story

Earlier this month West Oxford District Council hosted the first Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training workshop of 2017. This session was attended by 20 participants from the local community and delivered by experienced sports coach UK tutor, Adam Colley, who also works for LEAP County Sports Partnership. Below Adam discusses his experience of tutoring this workshop:

ICT session in action

The Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training is a really great course. Its content is relevant for such a wide range of people whether they already support disabled people to be active or are looking to provide new opportunities. It is a valuable tool as it gives participants new ideas they can relate back to their own environments.

The workshop I delivered in Oxford was attended by 20 participants from a variety of backgrounds, all of which had a role in supporting disabled people in physical activity. Some of the participants were working specifically with disabled adults or children, whilst others supported inclusive activities for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Through the workshop we explored how the participants could adapt an activity, the type of equipment or size of the playing area in order to keep everyone included and appropriately challenged. The great thing is the transferable nature of these skills as the participants realised that by making simple but effective changes, no matter what the activity is, there is always a way to meet the needs of the participants.

In addition to the skills the participants gain from the Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training, the workshop provides an opportunity for attendees to make new connections and share good practice and experiences. The moment that really stood out for me at the Oxford workshop was seeing the participants organise how they could stay in touch and support each other and the participants they work with following the workshop!

Out of all the courses I deliver as a tutor, the Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training has to be the most enjoyable! The content is so important and helpful to all that attend and the variety of learners with different backgrounds makes it really interesting. The great part is I keep learning too as there are always great ideas that I can take away!”
