Activity Alliance expertise plays part in Marathon wheelchair race

Activity Alliance once again played a part in supporting one of the most celebrated wheelchair marathons in the world.

Wheelchair racers move away from the start line of the London Marathon.

The first wheelchair race incorporated in the London Marathon was in 1983. 19 racers started that event, with 17 finishing the 26.2 mile course. Activity Alliance, and its predecessors BSAD, DSE and EFDS, has supported the race ever since 1983 and this year was no different. On the ground in London over the weekend were a group of volunteers, led by our expert events team. They were there to ensure that all athletes taking part had an experience on par with all other elite racers.

Activity Alliance has worked in partnership with London Marathon Events for almost 40 years, providing expert support on inclusion and accessibility at each event. This ranges from assisting with registration to organising accommodation and transport. Our team also offer advice and logistical support.

Michelle Weltman, Head of Disability at London Marathon Events, speaking last year said the partnership had made a huge difference.

"If Activity Alliance hadn’t got involved many years ago there would not have been a wheelchair race in London Marathon until a much later date. Their help and support has secured an event that’s world class and the knowledge that Activity Alliance brings to supporting the event is huge."

On race day, with 55 athletes competing this year, the team was in place to help whenever required. This included moving racing chairs to the start line to providing on-course support for any competitor that had to withdraw. Volunteers were also in place at the finish line in front of Buckingham Palace on The Mall. The extensive and varied nature of the work was epitomised this year, with one member of the team even providing translation for a Spanish athlete.

Jannine Walker, Activity Alliance National Events Manager, said:

"We are proud of the relationship we have with London Marathon Events. Together our teams ensure all racers have a quality experience and can focus on getting the best times knowing everything else is taken care of."

Alongside the wheelchair race, Activity Alliance also has 20 charity places for fundraisers in the London Marathon. This has meant that for years runners have raised thousands of pounds, helping us to achieve our vision of fairness for disabled people in sport and activity.
