New intersectionality research project with Leeds Beckett University
Activity Alliance is looking for people who work in sport and physical activity to take part in a research survey about intersectionality. We’re working with Leeds Beckett University to understand how intersectionality in relation to disability inclusion impacts disabled people's participation at a local level.

Building on our current knowledge, we have commissioned Leeds Beckett University for our latest research project. Intersectionality is a term that is increasingly used in sports and physical activity. They will conduct independent research to better understand how intersectionality is integrated into the local systems that drive place-based work across sport and physical activity.
We are delighted to be leading the way as one of the first national sports organisations to ask placed-based practitioners how they are working to diversify participants in sports and physical activity. The findings from this research will help us to develop co-designed intersectional resources and improve our support offer for organisations.
In 2021, Sport England launched its Uniting the Movement strategy. A 10-year plan to transform lives and communities through sport and physical activity. One of its aims is to address disparities in access to sport and physical activity based on people's background, gender, financial status, and location.
Activity Alliance welcomed Sport England's strategy, and in December 2024 we published our new strategy, with a new vision to deliver a future where all disabled people feel they belong in sports and activities. To achieve this, we need to understand how intersectionality impacts disabled people’s engagement in sport and physical activity.
Take part in the research survey
If you work in sport and activity, we’d love to hear how you support intersectional place-based work in relation to disability inclusion. Help us by taking part in this short 15-minute survey and encouraging your colleagues at all levels of your organisation to do the same.
Complete the Activity Alliance intersectionality survey here.
Researchers at Leeds Beckett University will collect the survey responses and share the findings with Activity Alliance. They may also contact you to see if your organisation would be willing to take part in some research interviews.
If you would like to discuss this research further or need support to complete the survey, please email Hayley Fitzgerald at Leeds Beckett University.
