Activity Alliance launches supporter scheme as part of IDDP campaign

Activity Alliance has launched a new supporter scheme today as part of its We All Belong campaign for International Day of Disabled People (IDDP). The campaign builds on our We All Belong strategy, which was introduced this time last year.

Becoming a supporter is free and open to individuals and organisations who share our vision of a future where all disabled people feel they belong in sports and activities. Supporters will receive regular updates and insights, discounts on training, and ways to get involved in Activity Alliance’s campaigns and programmes. Every person that signs up will gain free access to the introduction to engaging disabled people webinar on our Learning Hub. This CIMSPA accredited 45 minute webinar is designed to provide you with an introduction in how to engage disabled people in sport and activity.

The scheme aims to build a collective movement of organisations and people who are committed to disability inclusion.

This activity is part of Activity Alliance’s wider work to improve belonging in sports and activities. Belonging means representation, access and the right to choose how and where to be active. Yet, evidence shows that many disabled people still face barriers to being active:

  • Four  in ten (43%) disabled people feel they do not have the chance to be as active as they want to be.
  • Disabled adults are almost twice as likely to be inactive as non-disabled adults.
  • Three quarters (76%) of disabled people say they would like to be more active.

Throughout December and January, Activity Alliance will share stories of “belonging in action” from people, clubs and organisations across the country. These stories show how inclusive environments, positive attitudes and accessible opportunities can help disabled people feel more welcome and supported to be active.

Adam Blaze, Chief Executive of Activity Alliance, said:

"Belonging is central to our vision for a more inclusive sport and activity sector. Our We All Belong strategy set out a shared ambition for change. When disabled people feel welcome and supported, they are far more likely to be active. Our new supporter scheme gives people and organisations a simple way to stand with us and show their commitment to inclusion. By working together, we can help create a future where every disabled person feels they belong in sport and activity."

Activity Alliance Ambassador, Ben Andrews summed up what belonging means to him:

"Belonging in sport and activity means to me, you could turn up at any activity or sports and there’s the knowledge, willingness and attitude there to enable you to participate – or offer alternative providers if they’re unable to accommodate."

The We All Belong campaign encourages organisations, clubs and individuals to share examples of belonging in sport and activity using the hashtag #WeAllBelong on social media. Activity Alliance hopes the supporter scheme will bring together a growing movement of supporters who can champion inclusion across the country.
