GOGA making waves in Blackpool
In Blackpool, the Get Out Get Active (GOGA) programme is doing much more than introducing people to new ways of moving. It’s bringing communities together, building confidence and creating moments people can share and enjoy.
GOGA, led nationally by Activity Alliance, supports disabled and non-disabled people to enjoy being active together, especially those who have previously felt least connected to activity in their lives. Across the UK, the programme has helped tens of thousands of people to be more active, improve their wellbeing and build stronger connections in their communities.
A day packed with accessible opportunities
In 2025, the GOGA team in Blackpool hosted a special activity day that showcased just how inclusive and welcoming the programme has become. Participants, volunteers and partners including Active Blackpool and Blackpool Coastal Housing came together for a range of activities designed to appeal to people of all ages and abilities.
The day was filled with variety and energy. Attendees kicked off with a lively boxing session, enjoyed a refreshing group walk through Stanley Park, then tried their hand at Boccia (similar to bowls) and darts. The atmosphere was relaxed and joyful, with people encouraging one another and making new connections along the way.
More than just sport
One of the most powerful elements of GOGA is how it brings people together across generations and life experiences. Some come on their own, some bring friends or family, and many leave with new relationships that stretch far beyond activity sessions.
Participants have shared that GOGA offers a sense of structure, something to look forward to, and the chance to try new things in a welcoming environment. For some, this has led to spending time together outside of sessions and cultivating friendships that continue to grow.
This highlights one of the core aims of the wider GOGA programme: to reduce isolation, strengthen community connections and make being active a shared experience.
Nationally, research shows that GOGA not only increases physical activity but also improves mental wellbeing and helps people feel more connected to their local are:
- Nine in ten (92%) state improvements in their mental wellbeing after taking part in GOGA activities.
- More than three quarters (78%) of non-disabled participants
- Nearly two thirds (65%) of disabled participants became more involved in their local community because of GOGA.
By bringing people together to be active in ways that feel inspiring and accessible, Blackpool’s GOGA programme is helping to build a healthier, happier, more connected community, one activity at a time.
