UK Coaching puts Inclusive Learning Principles into practice
UK Coaching is embedding the Inclusive Learning Principles across its approach to learning and development, helping to make learning more accessible, representative and relevant.
The 10 Inclusive Learning Principles were developed by Activity Alliance in collaboration with UK Coaching and other sector partners. They provide practical prompts to help organisations consider inclusion from the beginning of the learning design process, rather than treating it as an additional requirement. For UK Coaching, this approach is helping to shape learning through lived experience, authentic examples and continuous improvement.
One example is UK Coaching’s Equali-tea sessions. These conversations give colleagues the opportunity to explore topics including disability, long-term health conditions and other equality, equity, diversity and inclusion issues.
Colleagues help shape the topics and contribute their own experiences, alongside input from internal and external experts. The sessions are designed to support different ways of participating and create space for open and meaningful conversations. This reflects the Inclusive Learning Principle ‘led by lived experience’, helping learning to be informed by real experiences rather than assumptions.
UK Coaching’s Coaching Conversations series puts the principle ‘keep it real’ into practice by sharing experiences directly from coaches working across different sports and environments.
The video-based learning brings real coaching experiences into the learning environment, helping coaches connect theory with situations they may encounter themselves. Closed captions are also built into the videos, supporting accessibility from the outset.
UK Coaching is also applying ‘Monitor and improve’ through structured feedback from learners, tutors and partners. Regular reviews provide opportunities to understand what is working, identify improvements and adapt learning over time.
This reflects an important part of the Inclusive Learning Principles, that inclusion is an ongoing process rather than a one-off task.
By embedding the principles across its learning and development approach, UK Coaching is demonstrating how organisations can turn inclusive learning from an aspiration into everyday practice.
The approach is helping to create learning that is more authentic, accessible and representative, while supporting a more diverse and inclusive sport and physical activity workforce.
