Every week, every year, every child should be included in PE

Paralympics GB launch Equal Play in PE – a free programme for teachers to include every child in every PE lesson.

This week Paralympics GB launched Equal Play in PE with Natwest Thrive – a new programme for the 2026-27 academic year to support teachers to deliver inclusive PE. The programme forms part of ParalympicsGB’s wider Equal Play campaign, which is calling for equal access to PE and school sport for disabled children.

Activity Alliance’s Play, move, belong: Active futures for young disabled people research report reveals only one in four disabled children regularly take part in PE and school sport – missing out on the confidence, self-belief and sense of belonging that comes with it.

Inclusive PE is something every teacher strives for, but the practical, classroom-ready support is hard to find. In fact, 95% of teachers encounter physical or sensory needs in their class, yet only 45% feel confident supporting them.

That's why Equal Play in PE, a ParalympicsGB programme partnered with NatWest Thrive, has been designed to help every child take part in PE, regardless of ability, or experience.

Activity Alliance supported the development of the programme and Helen Derby, Activity Alliance Strategic Lead – Programmes, attended the launch in London in September:

“We are delighted to be involved in Equal Play in PE. Every child should have the chance to experience enjoyable and rewarding sport and physical activity, but that’s not always the case for disabled children. No child should have to sit on the sidelines and watch while their peers enjoy PE and school sport.
“Equal Play in PE provides teachers and school staff with the tools they need to make PE a positive experience for all children. Giving every child the chance to benefit from school sport, have a good time, build confidence, stay healthy, and most importantly feel that they belong.”
