Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training is 'brilliantly interactive and diverse'

Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training, part of the Active Kids for All scheme, is a creative, informal and informative workshop. It is designed to improve the skills and confidence of those who support disabled people to be more active.

One workshop which recently took place was organised by Merseyside Sports and attended by individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

Ten attendees enjoyed the three hours of practical training at the Greenbank Sports Academy in Liverpool, supplemented by online resources.

Teri Wainwright, Workforce Support Officer for Merseyside Sports, told the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS):

“The workshop went really well - we had an excellent tutor who was very helpful. The highlight of the training was learning how to adjust sports and other activities.

“From our perspective at Merseyside, the purpose of Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training is to help increase the number of opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity in non-traditional sport settings. It also helps provide skills and confidence to people who deliver sessions.”

Described as "a very good course, with great tutors and well-prepared" by past participants, Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training recently passed a significant milestone with over 2,200 individuals having benefited from the initiative.

Feedback from the attendees of the recent workshop included two members of staff from Mencap Liverpool.

Jenny Paton, Progression Manager, said:

“It is a brilliantly interactive and diverse course that combine fun and knowledge in a great way, as well as giving plenty to think about.

“I have certainly come away with some new ways to encourage members of Mencap Liverpool to engage in activities in the future.”

Sheldon Griffiths, also from Mencap Liverpool, added:

“The Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training programme has been great, especially if you don’t have a sporting background. The course gives you a chance to understand the different types of inclusive training.

“After learning theses skills I will be able to adapt them in any training course I go to. Also, I have learned how to adapt activity to people with disabilities and that’s excellent.”

Merseyside Sports praised the Sainsbury’s Inclusive Community Training as highly effective, with Teri Wainwright adding:

“This is an interactive and a fun workshop, very informative and we would definitely recommend it to other County Sports Partnerships and other organisations who support people with disabilities.”
